There’s nothing quite like spending time, even if it means laborious hours in the kitchen, cooking up something your child really loves to eat. ‘Maa ke haath ka khana’ beats any Michellin Star dish! But can you ever compare that to a priceless gesture of your child surprising you one eventful evening with a lip-smacking spread of your favourite food?
I had a passing feeling that something was cooking in Kabir’s mind ever since he saw that Bajaj Electricals ad on TV. It’s a sweet family advertisement quietly lacing the idea around your head of giving your mother a break from her 365 days non-stop schedule of cooking, show some love and cook for her once in a while and make everyone’s life easier by getting home modern range of Bajaj Appliances. I quite liked the fact that the ad emphasises on involving everyone in the kitchen rather than making it the sole responsibility of the woman of the house.
Who knew Kabir would take full inspiration from this, put a spin of his own and leave me completely spellbound this festive time! Since I’m a single mother, Kabir is quite accustomed to the kitchen – he knows where to find his milk and operate the microwave. Other than that, he isn’t allowed to touch the stove or any other appliance, given that he’s still too young to go near sharp knives and combustibles. This time, he naively took help from his father and how!
His father was in town visiting us recently, which meant they had ample time to plan, shop and cook. I don’t know when he convinced his father, got him on board and planned everything. I was tricked into going for a coffee meet with my work colleagues and I returned home only to be surprised with these two happy men, a well-laid out table and a rather thunder-stricken kitchen. However, all worth it!
The menu was small, but selective of my favourites only. The table was decoratively laid out and lit up with fairy lights; just the way I like it. The festive season couldn’t have started on a better note for me.
It’s not every day that you are greeted with warm gestures that etch a lasting memory of great times. But when you do, cherish and treasure these just like I did with lots of family selfies. Go on, share this video with your loved ones and maybe you’ll be sharing a similar sweet surprise story someday too.
