Working out should not be viewed as an ancillary part of your day, but rather a necessity. Spending 4-5 hours in a week on your physical health is as important as eating, sleeping and breathing. Viewing exercise as a non-negotiable part of your day is really the trick to getting it done. Whether you choose to workout in a gym, do group sessions, combine running and yoga or strength training, the key is to start. But there are some things you need to take care of, especially if you plan to exercise outdoors –
Watch the temperature
Check the weather forecasts and heat alerts or cold waves before your workout so you know what to expect once you head outdoors.
Know your fitness level
If you’re new to exercise, take it easy when working out in general but even more so during summers. Reduce your exercise intensity if needed and take frequent breaks. Also, get your medical check-up done before you do intense workouts.
Drink plenty of fluids
Dehydration is a one of the main contributors to heat-related illness, so help your body to sweat and cool down by staying well-hydrated with water – and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink fluids.
If you’re exercising at an intense level also think about replacing your bottle of water with electrolytes.
Staying properly hydrated is just as important during cold weather as during hot weather. Drink before, during and after your workout, even if you don’t feel very thirsty, as dehydration may be more difficult to notice during cold weather exertion.
Use headphones to listen to music only if you are certain that you are working out in a safe place.
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting and breathable clothing to stay cool and help sweat evaporate. Also avoid dark colors, which can absorb heat. If your workout allows it, think about wearing a hat. For winters, layer yourself so that the layers can be removed and put back on, if necessary.
Wear sunscreen and use mosquito repellents
Slather yourself with sunscreen before you leave home. Many such lotions need time to bond with the chemicals in your skin; some take as long as 30 minutes to become fully effective.
Also, since you’re heading outdoors you need to be beware of mosquitoes.
Always use a mosquito repellent irrespective of the time of the year. You can go for Goodknight Fabric Roll-On that is made using 100% natural ingredients. The application extremely simple – just apply 4 dots on clothes and mosquitoes won’t bother you. If you are comfortable with applying a repellent on your skin, then go for the Goodknight Cool Gel which is non-sticky and absolutely skin-friendly. This product is made using aloe vera and leaves behind a soothing fragrance.
If you really don’t want to miss a workout then prepare a schedule and stick to it. Be regular and plan interesting ways to workout like doing yoga, heading to your nearby swimming pool…..just do it!
